◆What is Odissi?～a Classical dance of Eastarn India～
It is one of the oldest classical dances originating in the present day Odisha region.Even today, around Bhubaneswar, there remain
caves carved with portrayals of dancing girls and their accompanists from about 100BC.
Around 1200AD, the Mahari, whose practitioners completely dedicated themselves to the Divine, used to dance exclusively inside the
Jaganaath temple at Puri. But, due to various reasons, the Mahari declined.
The dance tradition of Akhadapila, young boys dressed up as girls, soon arose to continue the tradition of the Mahari dancers.
They used to dance outside of temples and were the forerunners of the tradition of Odissi.
More recently, about 60 years ago, some great gurus systemized Odissi dance as a performing art.One is Guru Deba Prasad Das,who
believed Odissi as a dance form has evolved from tribal, folk and classical culture. Today, this synthesis of disciplines, Odissi, is danced all around the world.
The most characteristic point of Odissi dance is Bhangi, bending the body into the likeness of a temple. For example the
Tribhanga, which has the elements of grace derived from the bending of the body in three places. Another is Chouka, a symmetrical half sitting position that emphasizes the creation and flow of
energy from the ground into the dancer.
